San Diego County includes a mixture of urban and rural communities, from coastal beachfront to mountains and desert. The area encompasses 4,300 square miles with 70 miles of beach along the Pacific Ocean. Roughly the size of the state of Connecticut, the county area is 65 miles from north to south and 86 miles from east to west. It borders Orange and Riverside Counties to the North, Mexico to the South, Imperial County to the East, and the Pacific Ocean to the West. It is the second most populous of California's 58 counties, and is the fifth largest county in the United States, yet much of the county's land area is considered rural with agriculture being an important component of the county's economy.
