The County of San Diego Health and Human Services Agency (HHSA) provides vital health, housing and social services to over 3.3 million residents across diverse communities including cities, tribal nations, military installations and unincorporated areas.
Each year, about one in every three county residents receives HHSA services. This highlights its critical role in building a region that is “Building Better Health, Living Safely and Thriving” through the collective effort known as Live Well San Diego.
A cornerstone of HHSA’s mission is its focus on equity, as outlined in its strategic plan dedicated to fostering an inclusive, diverse, and equitable environment for all. The plan outlines goals and metrics to advance opportunities for San Diegans to live well. One strategic initiative is equity, with two primary goals:
Accessible services: Apply an equity lens to maximize accessible services and resources to meet the needs of Black, Indigenous and People of Color (BIPOC); low-income and other historically under-resourced communities.
Cultural responsiveness: Cultivate inclusion, diversity and anti-racism through culturally responsive efforts that address inequities in the workforce and community.
HHSA’s Equity and Strategic Partnerships Team. This team provides support for justice, equity, diversity and inclusion projects. Initiatives include hosting community presentations and panel discussions on health equity, diversity, equity and inclusion, and collaboration with partners. These efforts showcase the vital services offered to underserved populations facing healthcare accessibility challenges.
HHSA leverages data reporting and business process analysis tools. These efforts support decision-making and enhance service integration which advance equity across all service areas. HHSA also actively engages with the region’s diverse communities and other County staff to offer tools and resources that promote equitable outcomes aligned with the Live Well vision.
HHSA is dedicated to continuous education, training, and engagement. HHSA celebrates culturally significant observances. These events create opportunities for staff and community members to connect, reflect, and engage in meaningful dialogue about culture, belonging and diverse histories.
These activities, coupled with workshops, community listening sessions, and collaboration with employee resource groups help HHSA maintain its commitment to ensuring all residents can live well, regardless of their race, ethnicity, national origin, religion, gender identity or sexual orientation.
By fostering a space where authenticity is valued and encouraged, HHSA aims to enhance both employee performance and community trust. This approach ensures that HHSA remains a responsive, community-driven organization, dedicated to meeting the evolving needs of those it serves and building a healthier, safer, and more inclusive region for all to thrive.
