Hospital-Level Care

Patient speaking to doctor and nurse

These services provide the highest level of care in a secured, hospital-like setting for people who are Medi-Cal eligible with serious mental health conditions requiring 24-hour intensive treatment. Services in this category are for people who need care beyond what is offered in outpatient, emergency, or other crisis settings, often due to the severity of their mental health symptoms or risk of harm to themselves or others. The goal is to stabilize the patient, help them regain mental function, and provide an aftercare plan before being discharged to a lower level of care.

Access to these services are typically through emergency departments and drop-offs from law enforcement, PERT, or MCRT. People may also be transferred from a Crisis Stabilization Unit or a Mental Health Crisis Residential program.
