Apply for Rental Assistance

Steps to Take for a New Applicant

  1. You must go to the MyHousing Applicant Portal in order to apply for rental assistance. Please see the directions on how to Submit a New Application.
  2. Once you have applied for rental assistance, you must wait 24 hours.
  3. After you have waited 24 hours, you can Create a New User Account. This account allows you to update your waiting list application.

Steps to Take for an Existing Waiting List Applicant

  1. You must Create a New User Account. This account allows you to update your waiting list application.
  2. Once you have created your new user account, you may update your waiting list application.

  • Section 8 Housing Choice Voucher (HCV)
  • Public Housing
  • Housing for Persons with AIDS-HIV (HOPWA)
  • Project-Based Voucher (PBV)
  • Moderate Rehabilitation (Mod Rehab)

When You Apply

  • Before you begin to fill out the application, be prepared with the names, social security numbers, dates of birth and annual income for all family members.
  • Use only letters in names, no hyphens (-).
  • Addresses must contain numbers and letters. Example: 345 Main St.

Directions and Information on how to apply

  • You may apply online at any time, please see our directions on how to Submit a New Application through our new MyHousing Application Portal.
  • After you have completed your application and are at the “Done” screen, you will receive a confirmation email that tells you we have received it.
  • You can print, save, or email the confirmation on the last screen. Please note: the screen will automatically close in 2 minutes.
  • If you need a place to stay tonight or in the near future, please call 2-1-1 or visit their website at 211sandiego.org

You must always respond to our letters. If you do not respond or if your letter is returned as undeliverable, your name will be removed from the waiting list.

Create a new user account and updating your waiting list application

  • After you submit your application, your name will be added to the waiting list, usually within 24-48 hours.
  • We will send a letter to you when you have been selected from the waiting list or if we are updating our files.
  • Be sure to keep your address current. Update the application anytime your information changes, for example, if you move, add someone to your family or if your income changes
  • You must always respond to our letters. If you do not respond or if your letter is returned as undeliverable, your name will be removed from the waiting list.
  • You will need to create a new user account if you haven’t already for the MyHousing Applicant Portal. You may create a new user account after 24 hours of submitting your application. Please see the directions on how to Create a New User Account and Update You Application.
