Kids of all ages can help
in the fight against mosquitoes!

Mosquitoes are annoying and their bites can be itchy and painful. Some mosquitoes can even spread diseases like West Nile and Zika through their bites. To stay healthy from these diseases prevent mosquito bites by learning about mosquitoes, starting with how they live!

mosquito life cycle

Mosquitoes spend the first part of their life underwater! Female mosquitoes lay their eggs in standing water (water without a current) like in a lake, pond, slow stream, or even in puddles in your backyard! These eggs hatch into baby mosquito larvae that live underwater. Mosquitoes can grow from eggs to biting adults in as little as one week!

The most important thing you can do to prevent mosquitos at your home is to find and dump out any standing water in or around your home. Mosquitoes can lay their eggs in as little as 1/4 inch of water. The picture below and our Prevent! website have some ideas on where to look for standing water at home, but don't stop there! Try to find other weird places with standing water at your home as well. When you find some, empty the water or dump it out so that if there were any mosquito eggs or baby mosquito larvae in it they won't be able to grow up into adults.
