Residential Treatment Services

Residential treatment facilities provide community-based specialty licensed mental health or substance use services as an alternative to acute psychiatric hospitalization and institutional care. See below to learn more about the different categories of residential treatment.

Mental Health Crisis Residential Services

Crisis and residential treatment programs provide care for adults with serious mental illness who have high clinical needs, many of whom are experiencing homelessness. Services are short-term (nine days on average) and are provided in a home-like setting as an alternative to psychiatric hospitalization, or to adults stepping down from inpatient care. Depending on the need, services may include:

  • Screening and assessment
  • Medication management
  • Individual and group counseling
  • Life skills education groups
  • Substance use treatment
  • Recreational and social activities
  • Connections to ongoing care

Mental Health Transitional Residential Services

Transitional residential services provide round the clock care for adults with serious mental illness who need assistance developing and refining skills that support transition to independent living or supportive housing, ideally within six to nine months. Services are provided in a home, utilize a team approach to care, reduce the likelihood of future hospitalizations, and support transition toward personal independence. Depending on the need, services may include:

  • Continued stabilization
  • Individual and group counseling
  • Medication management education
  • Pre-vocational and vocational assistance
  • Connection to ongoing care

Short-Term Residential Therapeutic Programs for Youth

Short-Term Residential Therapeutic Programs (STRTPs) provide structured, specialized care to improve the mental health and behavioral functioning of foster-involved youth with the goal of increasing self-sufficiency upon their transition to a less restrictive, community-based or family care setting.

Substance Use Residential Services

Substance use residential programs offer a safe, supportive environment for people to live while they work on reducing their use of drugs or alcohol. Care is provided around the clock and is available for youth, adults, and pregnant women (perinatal programs). The goal is to help people make positive changes and develop healthy habits. Depending on the need, services may include:

  • Therapy
  • Medical support
  • Activities to improve health and well-being
  • Medication-Assisted Treatment
  • Withdrawal Management
  • Integrated Medication Services
