Bulletin: South Region Health Concerns
- This report shows recent trends of gastrointestinal (GI) illness and asthma or chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) symptoms for residents of South Region.
- The surveillance bulletin is updated weekly.
- Data sources include syndromic (group of related symptoms) surveillance data from hospital emergency departments and communicable disease reports from healthcare providers and laboratories.
- Syndromic surveillance monitors symptoms, like GI issues, in emergency room patients before diagnosis, helping public health officials track health concerns quickly.
Title 17 of the California Code of Regulations requires that over 80 diseases and conditions are reported to local health authorities. This includes many diseases that cause diarrhea or other GI illness symptoms.
- Healthcare providers and laboratories report positive test results for these diseases to the County of San Diego for additional follow up and public health action. For more information, see Disease Reporting for Healthcare Providers.
- Epidemiology Unit – Data and Report: Provides an overview of select communicable diseases reported to the Epidemiology and Immunization Services Branch.
For more information, send an e-mail to the Epidemiology Unit.
