California Flood Preparedness Week
California Flood Preparedness
Week
(CFPW) is an annual event aimed at raising awareness about the
potential risks and impacts of flooding in California and promoting
proactive measures to mitigate these risks. It typically takes place
during a designated week in California and serves as a critical
reminder for residents and organizations to prepare for the
possibility of floods, which can be particularly relevant given the
state's susceptibility to heavy rainfall, storms, and flash floods. It
is a California Silver Jackets Team program that began in 2012 with a
single event in Sacramento County. The California Silver Jackets Team
is a multi-agency team that brings together federal, state, and local
agencies to focus on the state's priorities for flood risk management.
The team is led by the California Department of Water Resources and
empowered and supported by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE).
Its purpose is to empower local agencies and entities to inform their
citizens about flood risk and flood preparedness using best practices
for flood risk communication and to coordinate federal and state
agency resources to support local communities’ efforts. This year’s
CFPW – October 21-28, 2023 – is its twelfth year.
