Structural BMP Photo Guidance

This guide is designed to help you meet structural BMP photo review requirements and avoid the need to retake photos.

By following the steps outlined here, you will simplify the submission process and increase the likelihood of your Structural BMP photos being approved on the first try.

General Tips for All BMP Types

  • Ensure Visibility: Make sure all BMP components are visible in your photos. If needed, take multiple photos.
  • Assign Identification Numbers: Use the “Record ID” listed on your Maintenance Verification Letter (e.g., DPW2025-WPTCBMP-12345).
  • Photo Clarity: Ensure photos are well-lit, with no obstructions, and taken from angles that clearly show all components.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

  • Poor Lighting: Ensure photos are taken in daylight or with adequate lighting.
  • Incomplete Views: Always capture the entire BMP and its components.
  • Grate Not Removed: For below-ground BMPs, removing the grate is crucial.
  • No Identification: Photos without a clear reference to the BMP’s location or Record ID may be rejected.

Specific BMP Types

Here are some additional tips for specific groups of BMPs, along with example photographs.

Drain Inserts (And Most Below-Ground BMPs)

Follow the steps below to capture all the components of the BMP:

  1. Take a picture capturing the entire structural BMP
  2. Remove the catch basin grate
  3. Take photos showing the inside of the filter unit, including the basket and any filter media

Visual Tip:
Grate removed, filter components visible, location clearly identifiable.

Above-Ground BMPs

Capture the entire BMP, including:

  1. Inlet points
  2. Outlet points
  3. Flow path
  4. Adjacent slopes

Visual Tip:
Use a wide-angle shot for larger BMPs and ensure there are no obstructions. Make sure the entire BMP is visible, including the inlet, flow path, and outlet

BMPs with Raised Outlet Structures

Follow the steps below to capture all the components of the BMP:

  • Measure the “ponding depth” with a tape measure, noting the vertical distance between the BMP floor and the entrance to the raised outlet structure.
  • Take a photo while the tape measure is in position.

Visual Tip: Ensure the tape measure is held straight and properly aligned.
