Green Friday: Sustainable Alternative to Black Friday

11/22/24

Every Black Friday—a popular shopping event in late November following Thanksgiving—retail stores often lower prices and introduce limited-time discounts, encouraging shoppers to make the most of holiday deals. Concurrent to Black Friday, a growing movement known as Green Friday focuses on celebrating the day after Thanksgiving in a more sustainable way.

Greener Opportunities

Starting on November 29th, Green Friday encourages consumers to practice mindful shopping by supporting sustainable and ethical brands or choosing not to buy anything at all! This initiative promotes a consumption model that meets our needs while respecting the environment. Instead of shopping, participants can also enjoy nature by visiting parks or engaging in outdoor activities like hiking, community cleanups, and tree planting! To encourage this trend locally, San Diego County parks will waive all fees where they are usually charged.

Green Shopping Heirarchy

To make your shopping habits greener year-round, consider making shopping lists, choosing sustainable brands and local retailers, purchasing what you can secondhand, and questioning whether purchases are truly necessary. Additionally, there are frequently community cleanups and restoration projects that any member of the public can attend and contribute to protecting the environment!
