County Releases the 2023 Climate Action Progress Annual Report
09/09/24
The County is actively reducing greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions through sustainability initiatives across various departments. The newly released 2023 Climate Action Progress Annual Report highlights continued progress under the 2018 Climate Action Plan (CAP).
In 2023, the County successfully reduced 260,428 metric tons of carbon dioxide equivalent emissions by implementing measures in sectors, such as the built environment & transportation, energy, solid waste, water & wastewater, and agriculture & conservation.
2023 Action and Progress Highlights
Residential Solar Power: The County supported the installation of residential solar power systems equivalent to 17,459 homes, with over 90% of permits processed through the County’s Online Permits platform. This effort significantly boosts clean energy adoption and helps reduce reliance on fossil fuels.
Rainwater Harvesting: To promote water conservation, the County’s Watershed Protection Program distributed 1,197 rain barrels through the discounted rain barrel initiative, enabling residents to capture and reuse rainwater, which also helps reduce stormwater runoff.
County Fleet Electrification: The County added 66 new electric vehicles (EVs) to its fleet, advancing its goal to cut transportation-related emissions and reduce the carbon footprint of County operations.
Urban Tree Planting: The Department of Parks and Recreation planted 5,604 trees, contributing to carbon sequestration, improving air quality, and enhancing public green spaces.
Open Space Conservation: Through the Multiple Species Conservation Program, the County preserved 448 acres of open space, protecting wildlife habitats and contributing to climate resilience.
These updates highlight the County's multifaceted approach to climate action, encompassing renewable energy adoption, water conservation, transportation electrification, urban forestry, and habitat preservation. Each initiative reflects the County’s ongoing commitment to environmental stewardship and climate leadership.
