Earth Day 2023: Investing in Our Planet
04/10/23
Earth Day is an annual event celebrated around the world on April 22nd to demonstrate support for environmental protection. First celebrated in 1970 and now observed in more than 190 countries, Earth Day raises awareness about environmental issues and is an important reminder of the importance of taking care of our planet and the impact that our actions can have on the environment. By coming together to celebrate Earth Day and pledging to protect the planet, we can make a difference and help ensure a healthy and sustainable future for generations to come.
Sustainability is a core principle in the County’s Strategic Initiatives, and every day, the County applies the Earth Day theme in our work to help communities thrive while protecting the region’s unique and diverse natural resources. The integrated Regional Decarbonization Framework will help the entire San Diego region move to zero carbon emissions by mid-century. The Climate Action Plan (CAP) Update will prepare a CAP to reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions in the unincorporated area and from County operations, and will lead us to net zero emissions no later than 2045. These plans will guide future County action to reduce GHG emissions, promote alternative transportation, create green jobs, improve public health, divert waste from landfills, conserve open space, and more.
