Celebrate Earth Month Across San Diego County

04/10/24

April is Earth Month! Every year during the month of April, people all around the world highlight the importance of engaging in sustainability practices, conservation, and appreciation for our beautiful planet. Earth Month stems from Earth Day, which began in 1970 as a response to the increasing amount of air and water pollution produced in the U.S. By 1990, Earth Day expanded globally, turning the one-day celebration into a whole month!

Today, Earth Month is intended to bring awareness to issues facing our planet and encourage efforts to alleviate these issues and is one of the most significant month-long celebrations in the world.  Earth Day is a perfect reminder that it is up to us to keep our planet healthy - not only for our futures, but for the generations to come!

A significant part of Earth Month is Earth Day. Observed annually on April 22nd, Earth Day is the largest civic event in the world as it is celebrated in over 190 countries. This year’s theme is “Planet vs. Plastics” and at the County we plan to continue our sustainability efforts not only on Earth Day, but every day.

The County’s Strategic Initiatives, as well as the Draft Climate Action Plan (CAP), guide the County to create a healthier and more sustainable society. The CAP aims to reduce greenhouse gas emissions throughout the unincorporated area and in County operations by implementing measures that will guide us to a goal of net zero emissions by 2045.
