A third case of locally acquired dengue in San Diego County was confirmed in a Vista resident who became sick.
- The case did not recently travel to an area where dengue is common.
- This case is linked with the second locally acquired case in Vista, and the timeline of illness indicated that both cases were exposed around the same time.
- No other cases have been found so far.
A second case of locally acquired dengue in San Diego County has been confirmed in a Vista resident who became sick and was hospitalized.
- The case did not recently travel to a dengue-risk area.
- This second case is not connected with the first locally acquired case.
To prevent further spread of the dengue virus, County Vector Controlwill treat about 60 homes in Vista from today through October 29, 2024. County public health staff will be on site on October 26 and October 28 to provide information about dengue.

The first ever locally acquired dengue case in San Diego County has been identified in an Escondido resident.
- Neither the case nor their household members had a history of domestic or international travel.
- While the case was initially hospitalized, they have since been discharged and is recovering.
- No additional suspect cases have been identified at this time.
- This is the sixth case of locally acquired dengue in California this year.
To protect the public’s health and keep mosquitoes from potentially spreading the dengue virus, County Vector Control began spraying on October 4, 2024 for mosquitoes at about 170 homes in Escondido. Treatments will continue through the following week.
Dengue is a tropical viral disease not commonly found in the United States. San Diego County had no locally acquired cases since invasive Aedes mosquitoes were detected in 2014 until now.
People who travel to countries where dengue is common can get infected through mosquito bites. So far this year, there have been 49 cases of travel-related dengue in San Diego County.
