County Awarded $1.4 Million Grant to Protect Agricultural Land
02/13/24
On December 18, 2023, the California Strategic Growth Council awarded
the County of San Diego a $1.4 million grant under the Sustainable Agricultural Lands Conservation Program
(SALC). The grant will be used to fund an agricultural
conservation easement on a 450-acre avocado and citrus orchard in
Pauma Valley through the County’s Purchase of Agricultural
Conservation Easement (PACE) Program. The PACE Program promotes the
long-term preservation of agricultural land . These easements limit
future uses to agricultural operations, ensuring agricultural
viability for generations to come.
The PACE Program
contributes to the County’s Climate Action Plan
and local food
systems by reducing greenhouse gas emissions and supporting local
farmers in the unincorporated area. The 450-acre easement will surpass
the yearly PACE goal of 443 acres while ensuring that the
majority of the PACE annual budget remains available to acquire
additional agricultural conservation easements. To learn more about
the PACE Program and submit a cost-free application, visit the PACE website. This
year's application cycle closes on March 31st.
The $1.4 million grant award was part of over $116 million in this year’s SALC grants to permanently protect 50,500 acres of croplands and rangelands throughout the state of California. This is the ninth round of annual SALC funding and the first SALC acquisition grant awarded to the County of San Diego. SALC is part of California Climate Investments, a statewide program that puts billions of Cap-and-Trade dollars to work reducing GHG emissions, strengthening the economy, and improving public health and the environment.
