Transmission Based Precautions
Use Transmission Based Precautions for patients/residents known or suspected to be infected with pathogens transmitted by through contact, droplet, and aerosols. (e.g., COVID-19).

Use Enhanced Barrier Precautions (EBP) for patients/residents in long term care facilities who meet the criteria for this program. For more information about Enhanced Barrier Precautions, visit CDC Enhanced Barrier Precautions in LTCFs.

Use Contact Precautions for patients/residents known or suspected to be infected with pathogens transmitted by touching contaminated surfaces, objects or during close contact with the patient/resident. (e.g., multi-drug resistant organism (MDROs) not eligible for ESP/EBP, respiratory syncytial virus (RSV), draining wounds not contained by dressings, scabies).

Use Enteric Contact Precautions for patients/residents known or suspected to be infected with pathogens transmitted by contaminated hands or surfaces from gastrointestinal infections in which hand washing is encouraged as additional part of hand hygiene practices. (e.g., hepatitis A, norovirus, or Clostridioides difficile).
