EMT Renewal Certification Process
1. Prepare your documents on the device you will complete your application on (JPG or PDF format only). This will make the process smoother.
2. Application: EMT or AEMT Renewal online application
3. You will be required to upload the following:
- Current government-issued photo ID (Driver’s License, State of California ID, US Passport, or Military ID are all acceptable)
- Current CPR Card (Health Care Provider/Professional Rescuer/BLS Provider, or equivalent [CoSD Policy B-352]).
- Continuing Education documentation:
- 24 hours of California-accepted Continuing Education
(providers can be located here)
- OR
- 24-hour refresher course completion certificate
- 24 hours of California-accepted Continuing Education
(providers can be located here)
- Current State of
California Skills Competency Verification
- Please use the most up-to-date form; older forms will be rejected
- Skills competency must be verified by an approved skill verifier (see page 2 of the skills verification form for details)
- Effective July 1, 2019, training documentation for epinephrine, naloxone, and glucometer is required
- Current photo
(optional)
- Professionally appropriate headshot, similar to a passport photo, taken against a solid background for your LEMSIS ID eCard (optional)
- If applicable,
criminal/disciplinary disclosure documentation, including:
- Personal statement
- Court records
Note regarding the 2017 EMT skills enhancement:
- After July 1, 2019, all renewing EMTs must have documentation of epinephrine and naloxone administration as well as glucometer use training
- Training
must be provided by an EMT training program or CE provider
- The Skills Competency Verification form by itself is NOT sufficient to meet the training requirement
- If you received this training during a CE course, you may need to upload that document twice

EMT RENEWALS – LAPSED (See below)
Online applications will not be processed until all required documentation has been uploaded and the appropriate fee is received by the County of San Diego Emergency Medical Services.
The application process may take up to forty-five (45) days from the date a completed application is received. Once your application has been processed, you will receive an email notifying you that you may log in to your profile to print your County of San Diego EMT ID card. This certification is valid throughout the County of San Diego.

EMT RENEWALS – LAPSED MORE THAN 6 MONTHS, BUT LESS THAN 12 MONTHS
Same requirements as EMT Renewal with additional CE requirements:
- 36 hours of Continuing Education from an approved County of San Diego/State of California Prehospital Continuing Education Provider (taken within current cert cycle)
- College courses in physical, social, or behavior sciences can be accepted (ex. Anatomy, physiology, sociology, psychology, etc.)
EMT RENEWALS – LAPSED MORE THAN 12 MONTHS
Same requirements as EMT Renewal with additional requirements:
- 48 hours of Continuing Education from an approved County of San Diego/State of California Prehospital Continuing Education Provider (taken within current cert cycle)
- College courses in physical, social, or behavior sciences can be accepted (ex. Anatomy, physiology, sociology, psychology, etc.)
- Must complete a Live Scan in the State of California
- Current NREMT card
