What is it?

Pneumococcal [noo-muh-KOK-uhl] disease (PD) is caused by bacteria called pneumococcus. These germs can infect the ears, nose, lungs, lining of the brain and spinal cord, and bloodstream. For more information, visit the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention Pneumococcal Disease webpage.
