Hazardous Materials/Waste Guidance for Breweries and Beverage Manufacturers
Breweries and other beverage manufacturers may be subject to a variety of hazardous materials, hazardous waste, and other environmental regulations depending on the operations at the facility. These may include the Hazardous Materials Business Plan (HMBP), Underground Storage Tank (UST), Aboveground Petroleum Storage Act (APSA), Hazardous Waste Management, and Medical Waste programs which are all administered by the County of San Diego, Department of Environmental Health and Quality, Hazardous Materials Division (HMD).
In addition, beverage manufacturers may be subject to a Food Establishment permit with the Department of Environmental Health and Quality, Food and Housing Division (FHD), a permit with the County of San Diego, Air Pollution Control District (APCD) for facilities with emergency generators, and most are subject to Fire Code requirements, which vary depending on the local fire jurisdiction.
The Hazardous Materials Division held a hazardous materials awareness seminar on August 1, 2017 for breweries and a CUPA compliance virtual workshop on November 18, 2020 for all beverage manufacturers. The presentations are posted below to assist those who own or operate these types of facilities to understand the environmental regulations and permitting requirements. The presentations provide basic guidance on HMD programs and compliance requirements.
Please contact us by email or phone if you have questions or need assistance in the permitting process.
